APPLE’S COOL PHONE IS ‘TOO HOT’

IPHONE: Too hot to handle

Saturday July 4,2009

By Louise Barnett, Consumer Editor

THE successful launch of Apple’s new iPhone has been blighted by reports that it overheats in hot weather.

Some owners complain the sell-out handset gets too hot to make calls.

In the most extreme cases, users say their white handsets overheat to a glowing pink.

The new iPhone 3GS sold out within days of its UK launch a fortnight ago.

Apple on its website says the device may suffer from a weak signal, dimmed display and even stop charging if it gets too hot.

It tells owners only to use the phone in temperatures up to 95F (35C) and to store it only in temperatures up to 113F (45C).

It warns: “Don’t leave the device in your car, because temperatures in parked cars can exceed this range.”

The handset’s screen may show the warning message: “iPhone needs to cool down before you can use it”.

One blogger on the Macworld website wrote: “Toasty doesn’t even describe how surprisingly hot it got. It was too hot to even put the phone against my face.”

The Carphone Warehouse and O2 say they have had no complaints about it overheating.
