FASHION: Model wearing Asos

Sunday June 28,2009

By Heath Aston

ASOS, the online fashion retailer favoured by the under-30s, is set for a big international push which could include the US.

The fast-growing company is expected to unveil its long-awaited international expansion strategy this week when it reports record annual profits and stunning first-quarter trading with sales growth above 100 per cent.

The City expects a pre-tax profit for the year to the end of April of £14 million, up from £7.3 million in 2007/08. ASOS has given no firm indication where it will move first but chief executive Nick Robertson gave a clue recently when he said: “Don’t think I’m not looking at the success of Topshop in New York thinking ‘right, that’s me all over’.”

Former finance director Jon Kamaluddin was recently appointed to the role of international director to spearhead the expansion.

Analysts say ASOS annual sales could top £400 million within three years from an estimated £165 million in 2008/09.
