NO SWINE FLU PANIC AT GLASTONBURY

Three people with suspected swine flu have been sent home from the Glastonbury festival

Saturday June 27,2009

Three cases of suspected swine flu have failed to worry Glastonbury revellers as they look forward to fine weather on the festival's final day.

Two students and a child, none of whom are linked, were advised to leave the event after being diagnosed with possible cases, organisers said.

The students from Edinburgh and Exeter universities, and a 10-year-old child from a family of four, were all taken to isolation facilities before being sent home.

But the news did not stop fans enjoying a muscular set from Saturday's headliner Bruce Springsteen, who came down from the stage to touch the crowd over the barriers. He told the throng: "We want to build a house of sexual healing in all the little tents out there."

The Boss's turn went down a storm and focused on his rockier material, rather than his more reflective acoustic work.

Earlier in the day Festival spokesman Christo Hird said the suspected swine flu cases were nothing for campers to be concerned about.

He revealed: "Three unconnected people were taken off-site, straight to an isolation unit on the advice of the doctor and have now gone home. They presented with symptoms. All medical staff have been fully briefed. The view of the chief medical officer is that they had this before turning up.

"This was anticipated. There is no more risk here than anywhere. The figure of three in 177,000 people is regarded as very low."

No others have presented with symptoms, he said. A medical team of 600 is on hand to deal with illness. Ticket holders took the news calmly and many felt it was inevitable.

Police said a total of 290 crimes has been recorded by 10am on Saturday - an improvement on 384 at the same time last year. One hundred and sixteen arrests have been made, of which 99 were drugs related.
