UK NEWSSUSAN BOYLE BEATEN IN BRITAIN'S GOT TALENT FINALSunday May 31 2009
STUNNED dancers Diversity jumped for joy and embraced each other in emotional scenes as they were named the winners of ITV1’s Britain’s Got Talent. The dramatic final had millions of viewers teetering on the edge of their sofas – and some may have fallen off at the shock result. **** WATCH DIVERSITY'S WINNING PERFORMANCE NOW **** The sensational 10-strong dance troupe from Essex beat Susan Boyle, 48, even though pundits had been predicting the Scot’s win ever since she became an international overnight sensation back in April. Millions tuned in to watch the dancers, who are aged between 12 and 25, claim the £100,000 title. The other part of their prize will be the chance to perform for the Queen at the Royal Variety Performance. The entire audience, including the three judges, stood up to watch them repeat their winning performance a the end of last night’s show.
Bookies greeted the result with relief, as they were set for a £5million payout if Boyle had taken the title. **** WATCH DIVERSITY'S WINNING PERFORMANCE NOW **** David Williams of Ladbrokes said: “Susan came unstuck and we’re breathing a huge sigh of relief. We were staring down the barrel of a mega payout on her. Diversity have ridden to the rescue of bookies and we’ll be sending them a bottle of champers It was a one-horse race all the way up to the weekend and only became interesting at the last minute.” Susan Boyle came second in the competition, followed by saxophonist Julian Smith, 39 in third place. Meanwhile, Britain’s Got Talent was deluged with complaints yesterday after 10-year-old singer Hollie Steel burst into tears on the hit TV show. ITV switchboards were swamped with hundreds of callers after the little girl broke down after fluffing her version of Edelweiss during Friday night’s live semi-final. **** WATCH DIVERSITY'S WINNING PERFORMANCE NOW **** Millions of upset viewers watched as hosts Ant and Dec and judge Amanda Holden dashed onto the stage to comfort her. Her mother Nina also rushed to her daughter’s side and begged the judging panel to give Hollie another chance.
It is the latest controversy to hit the top-rated show after criticism of the handling of shy Scottish singing sensation Susan Boyle, the use of youngsters, and the dubious nature of some of the acts. Now TV regulator Ofcom could launch a probe if ITV is accused of failing in its duty of care to the contestants. Another disgruntled view said she was unable to get through to ITV because they were fielding too many complaints. “It was uncomfortable viewing seeing the 10-year-old breakdown. She should not have been put in the competition – it’s exploitation.” One viewer who did get through said: “Britain’s Got Talent and all other shows should restrict the entrance from 16 years onwards because of the pressure it puts on young children to perform for their mommies and daddies and the rest of the nation. Yes Hollie Steel does have a very good singing voice but emotionally she was not ready for such a big event.”
Another added: “There should be a ‘Junior’ version of the show. viewers and the judges.” A spokesperson for the show said yesterday: “All the judges agreed Hollie should be given another chance. She didn’t cry because of the pressure but because she fluffed a line. Even Susan Boyle fluffed a line.” SUSAN BOYLE'S PROUD BROTHERS: CLICK HEREThere were also concerns that YouTube sensation Susan Boyle, 48, from Blackburn, West Lothian, was struggling to cope with her sudden rise to global stardom. It was rumoured earlier in the week the spinster, dubbed the ‘Hairy Angel” because of her unkept hair, might bow out of the final after reports she had lost her cool during a confrontation with two reporters. Yesterday, show judge Piers Morgan jumped to her defence saying it was the media that was losing the plot not the contestants. He insisted that Boyle was in “very good spirits” ahead of last night’s final. Publicity guru Max Clifford has predicted Boyle, who lives in a modest council house, with her white and ginger cat Pebbles, is set to make up to £10million. He said yesterday: “It really is fantastic fairy tale material, a bit like the story about the ugly duckling turning into a beautiful swan.” Voters also had the choice of 12-year-old soul singer Shaheen Jafargholi, teenage heart-throb Shaun Smith, 17, John Neill and Sallie Lax, a granddad and granddaughter singing duo known as 2 Grand, There were also dance act Flawless, and 12-year-old street dancer Aidan Davis. An ITV source said last night that there was no age limit on BGT, although judge Simon Cowell’s other show X-Factor has a limit of 16.

LIFE NOT ALWAYS FAIR
01.06.09, 10:19am
thats the cruel reality of shows like this, the best quite often don't win, to make voting fairer they should limit one vote per telephone number, but in todays technological marketplace there are plenty of ways to get around it.
Being a winner doesn't give you guaranteed success either, there have been plenty of runners up on talent shows who have gone on to success careers and there are equally winners whose careers have not been so successful.
Susan has obvious talent but whether she succeeds as a professional singer will very much depend on her inner strength and support of those around her.

LIES AND CHEATING

I want to know the exact truth from the phone company to prove that Susan Boyle was beaten. I don't believe that dance group got more votes than her. Susan probably won, why wouldn't they let her? I won't bother watching this show next time because I have no trust that the results weren't a lie. In fact I only watched this time due to Susan Boyle being so incredible. She's beautiful in body, mind and voice. It's long overdue that her gift was shared with humanity. Thank you Susan.

......what a fix these 'TV Shows' are, The 'winners' are chosen behind the scenes, the viewers have no choice, only the telephone companies and their share holders come out the winners

Egg on my face there but thanks for the correction. Until Susan Boyle appeared and made the news I didn't watch the show apart from the odd clip. I am not a fan of Simon Cowell
or the other fellow I think he was on the US apprentice. I spend too much time trying to get money from the government to clear the moat round my castle to watch much TV Brown told me i'Il get the moat money if i am elected to Parliament.Given my lack of knowledge about Britain's Got Talent I reckon i am just the man for the job. Most MPs don't know much about the subjects they deal with apart from allowances..
