Sheffield United celebrate scoring against QPR

Sunday December 20,2009

By Hector Nunns

PAUL Hart is clearly a man who likes the rollercoaster way of life.

After all the Portsmouth turmoil with its multiple takeovers and financial woes, he is on a new switchback ride at QPR.

At Loftus Road too, there is never a dull moment. Hart is the ninth manager in two years under co-owner

Flavio Briatore.

He has been given the QPR job until the summer, after former boss Jim Magilton was given the boot last

week. That stemmed from Magilton’s dressing-room bust-up with Hungarian midfielder Akos Buzsaky earlier this month, amid reports of an alleged head-butt.

Rangers skipper Mikele Leigertwood got Hart’s tenure off to the perfect start with a goal after just 90 seconds of this match.

However that lead lasted just six minutes as Richard Cresswell bundled in an equaliser.

Sheffield United manager Kevin Blackwell could have been at Loftus Road himself – but for a Rangers

approach being rejected by the Blades board in the summer.

And Blackwell will have been happy enough after his team extended their unbeaten run in the league to seven games in west London.

Hart’s fervent wish for a dream start was duly granted. Jay Simpson won a corner off Chris Morgan in the second minute and Ben Watson’s set-piece was only half-cleared to the edge of the area.

Captain Leigertwood’s fierce drive took a violent deflection to give goalkeeper Mark Bunn, on loan from

Blackburn, no chance.

Rangers might have added a second but for a superb, last-ditch tackle by Matt Kilgallon on Simpson just as he was pulling the trigger. However, little has come easy for Hart this season and the home side’s lead lasted precisely six minutes.

Ben Watson was guilty of a horror back-pass and United left-back Toni Kallio – on loan from Wolves – took full advantage, squaring for Cresswell to force the ball in from close range.

Rangers were temporarily stunned but even without Buzsaky in the line-up they have a bristling armoury

of attacking power at their disposal.

Adel Taarabt, the Spurs forward, almost fired Rangers back in front after a cleverly-worked corner with

Watson, but his shot flew inches wide.

But overall in the first half the mercurial Moroccan was having one of those days when every trick failed

to come off.

Bunn did have to be at his sharpest to deny Wayne Routledge after the nippy QPR wide-man escaped his markers on the half-hour.

The chances kept on coming for Rangers – but Hart’s team continued to spurn them.

On the hour Patrick Agyemang escaped down the left and his cross fell perfectly for Simpson but he horribly miscued his volley from 10 yards out.

And Morgan was lucky to escape after 66 minutes when he appeared to fell Simpson in the area.

James Harper went close as play switched to the other end, curling a 20-yard effort just over Radek Cerny’s crossbar.

But there was more home fan fury when Kaspars Gorkss was muscled to the ground by Kilgallon from another Watson corner.

Watson could have made Hart’s day complete in stoppage-time – but his header crashed against the bar.
